UUM ONLINE: 13 July, 2017 - The recent promotion of 12 academic staff members to the position of Professor Special Grade C (VK7) has attained the status of a record for the highest number of staff members promoted to the post of Professor in a single promotional exercise in the eight years under the stewardship of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, i.e. since his appointment to the position in 2010.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, as a result of the promotion, the total number of Professors at UUM currently stood at 72, and the overall number of academic staff members who had been promoted since 2010, was 445.
He said that the promotion also showed that the university was concerned for the welfare of its staff members, particularly the academic staff members, for all the effort and sacrifice they had contributed towards the university’s attainment of excellence.
"The position of Professor is the highest achievement that every academic dreams of when their career of choice is that of an educator. It is the pinnacle of achievement in the career of an academic.
"This promotion will act as encouragement and motivation, as well as promise of recognition, to the academic staff, comprising members of the UUM Academic Staff Association (PERSATU), to strive for excellence," he said, at a ceremony held to present Letters of Promotion to Academic Staff Members, as well as celebrate the Hari Raya Aidilfitri cheer under the auspices of PERSATU, at the foyer of the School of Computing (SoC), yesterday.
He also expressed his expectation that the large number of Professors at the university would effect a huge impact upon the university by way of imbuing the university with the reflective sheen of their respective levels of excellence, thus raising the university's reputation to greater heights.
The Vice-Chancellor said that, today, as a management university, UUM was no longer viewed askance, or looked down upon, as a direct consequence of the university’s attainment of a myriad impressive accolades, including several prestigious accreditations, which have placed UUM on par with the University of Malaya (UM), specifically in the field of business management.
The Vice-Chancellor also emphasised the need for the academic staff to develop the Centres of Excellence (CoE) at UUM through gainful collaborative undertakings with foreign universities and invigorating their research and publication activities.
At the ceremony, a total of 12 Associate Professors, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim, received official letters formally promoting them to the position of Professor with effect from 3 July.
