Demonstration Of Exercise Concludes The 3rd JCEX THAMAL

UUM ONLINE: After a nine-day stint at UUM, undergoing a collective exercise on running humanitarian relief missions, the participants of the Joint Combined Exercise Thailand and Malaysia 2017 (JCEX THAMAL) concluded their training with a demonstration of the said exercise at the University Lake on 25 July.

The closing ceremony of JCEX THAMAL, which began on 17 July, was officiated by the Chief of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, General Surapong Suwana-adth, at the Mu'adzam Shah Hall. The event was also attended by the Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces, General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor.

In his speech, General Surapong said that the exercise, or training, in humanitarian aid would indirectly benefit both countries in the form of preparedness in the face of disasters.

He said that the exercise also served to strengthen relations and increase cooperation and the sharing of experience between Malaysia and Thailand, as well as enhance the bilateral military integration capabilities in the region in running humanitarian and disaster relief (HADR) missions.

Meanwhile, General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi, on his part, said that the participation of the teams from the two countries and that of the observers from ASEAN member countries and the United States, had, together, contributed to the success of the nine-day exercise.

"The triumph of JCEX THAMAL lies not only in the fact that it was successfully run, but also in the fact that it helped raise the capabilities of bilateral military integration between Malaysia and Thailand, as well as the level of professionalism in the armed forces of both the countries.

"I am also happy that, even though there were cultural differences, the participants still managed to work together to formulate operational plans and adapt the techniques involved in running humanitarian and disaster relief (HADR) missions to the dictates of hypothetical scenarios," he said.

He said he was hopeful that, with the descent of the final curtain, the exercise had provided a wealth of wisdom that would help enhance human resource skills and raise the level of training in the future.

General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to UUM for having played host to JCEX THAMAL 2017. He also commended UUM on having furnished an excellent infrastructure on campus that greatly expedited the running of the exercise.

The attendees of the ceremony also witnessed events such as the formal removal of arm-bands and the presentation of tokens of appreciation to representatives of the various observer nations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including UUM, which was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim.

Also present at the occasion were the Chief of the Malaysian Army, General Dato' Seri Zulkiple Kassim; Chief of the Royal Malaysian Navy, Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin; Chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force, General Dato' Seri Affendi Buang; UUM Deputy Registrar, Mr. Baharudin Yaacob, and other senior officials.
