UUM ONLINE: 24 August - Foregrounding a précis of the Malaysian narrative, ‘My Country Of One Heart and One Soul’ (Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa) as the theme of the National Day celebration this year, the UUM Chancellery, in collaboration with Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Baru Sintok (SMKBBS), hosted, yesterday, a Merdeka Run (Larian Merdeka) and the 2017 Merdeka Mind Journey (Kembara Minda Merdeka 2017) programme in conjunction with the University Level Independence Day celebration.
A total of 250 students, comprising students of Forms One, Two and Four, were led by their School Principal, Mr. Mohd Amin Abdul Hamid, on the 3-kilometre Merdeka Run, which started at SMKBBS and finished at the UUM Welcome Centre, where they were warmly received by the Director of the Chancellery, Mr. Ahmad Rasidi Abdullah.
Mr. Mohd Amin stated that the Merdeka Run programme was a new experience for the school, especially for the students, who were not only able to look back upon the historical importance of independence and become more aware of the nation’s history, but also able to get the opportunity of setting foot on campus.
"This programme is aimed at nurturing the spirit of patriotism among the students so that they would be appreciative and mindful of the struggles and sacrifices endured by our founding fathers to wrest national independence from British colonial rule," he said.
Nur Atiqah Yusri, a Form Four student, said that the Merdeka Mind Journey programme had taught her the importance of punctuality and teamwork.
At the same time, she said, she was able to gain an appreciation of the undaunted spirit of our forefathers, who had struggled relentlessly for the nation’s independence until it was finally achieved on 31 August 1957.
The Merdeka Mind Journey programme offered prizes to the first, second, third and fourth place winners, who, respectively, received gift hampers worth MYR100, MYR 70, MYR 50 and MYR 30, plus certificates.
The prizes were presented by the Chairman of the SMKBBS Parent-Teacher Association, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rusdi Omar, who is also the Dean of the Student Development and Alumni (PPA), College of Law, Government and International Studies (COLGIS).
