New Students Are Urged To Be Prepared For Industry 4.0

UUM ONLINE: The new students of the university were urged to prepare themselves by mastering a variety of skills to meet the challenges that will be brought on by the advent of the fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0.

Through a video message, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, said that Industry 4.0 was an era in which all graduates needed to have more than one pre-existing skill.

He said that, in the future, graduates would need to have new skills and abilities to work not only in one field or for one employer, but also in two or more jobs and for different employers.

"In the next four years, individuals would no longer be able to rely solely on one job, hence, all UUM students need to be prepared and equip themselves by taking advantage of the opportunities available at this university to add new skills to their repertoire.

"If students still relied on only one skill, then, I’m afraid, they would not be able to compete nor cope with the rapid changes that are certain to take place in the future," he said.

In the video message, the Vice-Chancellor also expressed his gratification at the knowledge that UUM was the university of choice for the new students to pursue their tertiary education.

The Oath Taking Ceremony of The First Semester 2017/2018 Academic Session Orientation Week and the Vice-Chancellor's Address proceeded with the taking of the oath, led by Mr. Muhammad Afiq Mohd Shahar and followed by 3,977 new students. Subsequently, the pledge certificates were handed over to the Acting Registrar, Mr. Baharudin Yaacob.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim, who represented the Vice-Chancellor at the event, urged the new students to comply with university rules and regulations and uphold their responsibilities as students.

"Hone the soft skills required by employers upon graduation, work in a team, acquire leadership qualities and have the ability to solve problems wisely, apart from enhancing human capital skills by being actively involved in societies and uniformed bodies.

"Take advantage of the opportunity of being at the university to build your personal identity and become a useful person and, at the same time, safeguard the good name of UUM with every action based on rationality and maturity," he said.
