UUM ONLINE: To help students better understand data mining, a group of researchers, led by Dr. Jastini Mohd Jamil and Dr. Izwan Nizal Mohd Shaharanee, from the School of Quantitative Sciences (SQS) developed an innovative web application called 'JustMiner'.
JustMiner helps students better understand not only data mining, but also big data analytics.
The user-friendly JustMiner web application offers three modules, namely, Rel2Mark, RuleEve, and PASS-DT.
"Rel2Mark is the first phase in the data mining process where it converts the relational data format to the transactional format, thus enabling the data in the transactional format to be used to generate association rules.
“RuleEve, on the other hand, is a module that verifies the rules that have been generated from the association rule mining process. It is capable of determining whether the rules generated are accurate and applicable to all," said Dr. Jastini.
The next module, PASS-DT, a data mining application based on decision tree methodology, is capable of classifying and predicting the academic performance of students.
"This web application product, which utilises PHP and JAVA software, earned us the gold medal at the Invention, Innovation and Design On E-Learning (IIDEL) Competition held in September.
Universiti Utara Malaysia took home two gold medals and one silver medal at IIDEL 2017, which was held in conjunction with the International University Carnival on e-Learning (IUCEL 2017) at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. The event was attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh.
