Visually Impaired Graduate Is Recipient Of Chancellor’s Gold Medal

UUM ONLINE: 19 November - The stay positive and high-fighting spirit of a disabled woman (OKU) enabled her to chart the most beautiful success and in one fell swoop was awarded with the Chancellor’s Gold Medal at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) 30th Convocation Ceremony yesterday morning.

"This award is a recognition that shows no difference between me and other human beings, the difference is the efforts of those who work to succeed after putting in the hard work we are required to pray and put our trust in God.

"Vision impairment is not an obstacle in fact it became the driving force to succeed just like the others but what I feared the most was failure to use my intellect capabilities well because the power of reason drives and guides other parts to do the impossible based on the view of ordinary human beings.

"To gain the strength and success, one should look at the success of others and instil in ourselves that we can be on par with everyone else," she said when delivering her speech.

"From the first day I set foot in UUM, I was determined to succeed. I needed both mental and physical strength as everything needed to be managed by myself. I too had to stop complaining about my self-inadequacies.

"Fortunately, UUM has rendered me a lot of help throughout the course of my studies namely providing visual aids, computers, voice recorders, screen readers and library facilities," said the woman who received the Dean’s Award for five consecutive semesters.

Ms. Harziah excelled in both academics as well as in co-curriculum activities especially in the off-campus activities namely the National Council for the Blind Malaysia.

Meanwhile, graduate of the Bachelor of Philosophy, Law and Business, Ms. Siti Izyan Mohd Safuan and graduate of Bachelor of Science (Industrial Statistics), Ms. Lok Pik Yin took home the Royal Education Awards each.

"My dream is to continue to serve the country in order to improve the welfare of society, especially in the context of law and business," said the eldest of three siblings from Batu Pahat, Johor.

The student who was formerly sponsored by Bank Rakyat Foundation, underwent industrial training at Yayasan Bank Rakyat for four months, now serves as Procurement Executive at Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. She now coordinates contracts and agreements with suppliers.
