Graduates Must Develop Their Creative And Innovative Tendencies Into Distinct Skills To Keep Up With The Fast-Paced Processes Of The Fourth Industrial Revolution

UUM ONLINE: In meeting the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution that is engulfing the world at present, members of the university community must continue to be creative and innovative.

According to UUM Pro-Chancellor, Tun Dato' Seri (Dr.) Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim, the fast-paced processes of globalization and industrialization, triggered by the technological explosion of the Fourth Industrial Revolution that is engulfing the world at present, has clearly affected the education system, the economic system, the work environment, and the lifestyle of our society.

He added that, the global transformation that is taking place now has no precedent in the history of the world in terms of the rate in which it is proceeding and the magnitude of its impact. Moreover, this state of affairs has placed us in a position which allows us no escape from the approaching tsunami in the form of communication technology and a host of new technologies that are closely interconnected to a variety of fields including the manufacturing, engineering, services, and business management industries.

"For this reason, we need to fully develop our creative and innovative tendencies into distinct skills as the dual processes of democratisation and globalisation have transformed the direction of education at the universities and institutions of higher learning.

“At this point in time, the aim of education is to meet the needs of the job market, while the education itself has become a commodity. Furthermore, academics and scholars are no longer the custodians of knowledge,” said Tun Dato' Seri (Dr.) Ahmad Fairuz during the sixth session of the 30th UUM Convocation Ceremony.

He added that, market power that dictates employment trends played a big role in determining the direction of education. This is coupled with the proliferation of various public and private institutions of higher learning specialising in specific fields of study has indirectly reflected the power of the market demand.

He stated that, UUM, as an institution of higher education with a huge number of students, must cope with a variety of challenges to fulfil the aspirations and high expectations of the parents who not only expect UUM to offer their children wholesome education, but they also believed wholeheartedly that their children will find a place in the job market.

“On the part of the university management team, this trust will be honoured to the fullest extent, though negotiating the chessboard of the employment market to successfully land a job these days is no mean feat as our graduates are pressed to compete with others to find a suitable job in the open market.

“This situation is further complicated by the changes in the employment sector that are closely related to the use of technology, let alone the heavy reliance of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on science, engineering technology and information technology, which is far beyond the reliance on manpower”, said Tun Dato' Seri (Dr.) Ahmad Fairuz.

He further reminded the university community to fathom the depth of this phenomenon and the extent of its ramifications, as well as the magnitude of the transformation it will entail, and, in consequence, make an effort to constantly update the teaching and learning system, apart from attuning the students’ way of thinking to be more sensitive to the nuances of every technological change.

A total of 811 graduates received their scrolls during the sixth session of the 30th UUM Convocation Ceremony.
