Digital Learning Transforms The Role Of The Students To Become The Creator Of The Teaching & Learning Resources

UUM ONLINE: The high-speed technological revolution in the education sector has transformed the education landscape into a different and challenging teaching & learning (T&L) scenario.

The Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Dato’ Seri Amar Diraja Dato’ Seri Diraja Tan Sri Haji Osman Haji Aroff stated that, the technological 'overload' construes that the university might not be able to survive simply by changing the T&L methodology, but we must convince students to innovate through technology.

“Technology-driven learning has impacted various aspects of the campus life. Active engagements from students who love to invent, collaborate and communicate frequently have changed the role of the instructor as a wise person on the stage or “sage” on the stage to become the co-driver or the guide.

“Thus, the university must provide the opportunity for students to be immersed in the “learning by doing” approach, which attempted to transform the role of the student, from acting as the user to become the creator, said the Pro-Chancellor.

“This is not an alternative 'T&L' method, but this should be the modern T&L features these days.

“The key to succeed in this makerspace movement is the shift from the 'ready-made knowledge' furnished by the lecturers, to a more conducive environment for exploration, innovation as well as collaboration through hands-on and minds-on approaches that correspond with authentic problems in real life.

“It is obvious that being digitally literate is no longer adequate and we need new skills to quickly adapt and co-create in whatever form of the makerspace available to us”, added Dato’ Seri Amar Diraja Dato’ Seri Diraja Tan Sri Haji Osman Haji Aroff .

A total of 824 graduates received their scrolls during the seventh session of the UUM 30th Convocation Ceremony.
