UUM ONLINE: Kuala Lumpur - A total of two graduates from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) received the Nadi Negara Awards for the Disabled Category at the 2017 Nadi Negara Awards ceremony held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) yesterday.
The two recipients were students with physical disabilities namely Mr. Meor Muhammad Afif Aiman Abu Bakar and a visually impaired graduate, Ms.Harziah Khalid Yunus.
Another recipient of the 2017 Nadi Negara Award, Mr. Mohd Ali Faiz Salleh, was the former President of the UUM Student Representative Council (MPP) 2014/2015.
According to Mr. Meor Muhammad Afif Aiman who is currently pursuing his Doctoral degree in International Studies, his involvement in the disabled category in the competition was the first and he never had the expectation of being honoured with such an award.
He said the award was a catalyst or pushing factor for himself to be more involved in the disabled community as he had previously participated in competitions in the regular category.
"I will try my very best to inspire my friends in the disabled community especially in the development of personality, to not just focus on technical skills.
"Next, I would like to further strengthen the status of the disabled community in the country, especially amongst graduates with disabilities and to ensure the ultimate goal of increasing the number of disabled students pursuing tertiary education is realised," he said.
He added that the award also proved that the Government recognized the contributions of disabled students as the ‘pulse’ of the nation that also helped in the development of the country.
Meanwhile, Harziah, a graduate of the Bachelor of Business Administration and also the recipient of the Chancellor's Gold Award at UUM's 30th Convocation, expressed her appreciation and gratitude when she was selected as the recipient of the 2017 Nadi Negara Award in the Disabled Category.
"The experience of having to drop out of school when I was young became a driving force for success today," said the lass who hailed from Ketiau Putatan, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
A total of 25 graduates from various public universities, private universities, and graduates from universities overseas received the 2017 Nadi Negara Award presented by the Higher Education Minister, Dato' Idris Jusoh.
In his speech, he expressed his appreciation to the UMNO Women's Movement for their services and efforts of establishing the Nadi Negara Award.
The Nadi Negara Award is an initiative introduced by the UMNO Women's Movement in 2009 to recognize university graduates who performed exceptional well in academic, co-curricular and leadership.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak congratulated all the award recipients who did UUM proud.
