UUM ONLINE: 4 September - A total of 4,764 new students comprising 4,474 local students and 290 international students who accepted their offer to study at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), registered this morning to pursue a total of 40 study programmes offered in the first semester of the 2018/2019 academic session.
Amongst those who registered were Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) and Malaysian Religious Certificate (STAM) school leavers, Diploma holders, students who completed their Matriculation and Foundation Studies in Management and international students. All in all 3,467 were female students while 1,297 were male students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said, from the number of local students who enrolled this morning, 3,025 or 74 per cent were from the B40 group (household income of MYR3,000 and below).
According to him, the university would like to provide the students the opportunity to change their fate while at the same time emphasize on the quality that proved the students were amongst the smartest students.
"As for international students, we have received the largest number of admissions from Indonesia with 137 students, followed by China with 84 students and Yemen with 15 students who will be pursuing the various Bachelor and mobility programmes.
"Meanwhile the programme of study with the most number of admission is Bachelor of Business Administration with Honors with 371 students, followed by Bachelor of Accountancy with Honors (318) and Bachelor of Economics with Honors (307)," he said.
Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir said that out of the total students, 219 were students who possessed a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 of which 128 students were enrolled into the Bachelor of Accountancy with Honors programme, 32 students were enrolled into the Bachelor of Law with Honors programme and 19 students were enrolled into for Bachelor Accounting (Information System) with Honors programme.
He said this year, UUM had received admission of students with a GPA of 3.37, among the other three programmes which recorded admission with the highest GPA were Bachelor of Education with Honors (Accounting) with a GPA of 3.82, Bachelor of Philosophy, Law and Business with Honors (3.79), while Bachelor of Accountancy (Information Systems) with Honors with a GPA of 3.77.
"What is special about the registration day is when UUM receives admission of 10 disabled students and indigenous people.
"Overall, as of Aug 26, we have 30,124 students comprising 24,711 undergraduate students while the rest are post graduate students," he said.
He also presented donations in the form of cash donations to special students apart from that he also spent time assessing the student registration process.
