The two-day programme which began from 24 April was organised by the Malaysian Institute of Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Youth and Sports, successfully attracted as many as 300 students from the Northern Zone to take part.
The invitation to participate in the debating competition was open to all students from Form 1 up to Form 5.
UUM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Hj Abdul Karim said that NAD 2015 is a suitable platform for students to demonstrate their critical thinking skills as well as provide students with the opportunity to hone their communication skills in English.
"The debating competition provides students with among others, the opportunity to be witty and not to mention become more open-minded in acknowledging as well as refuting points. The students not only have to think on their own feet they also can practise communicating in English, thus, improving their self-confidence," he said at the closing ceremony of NAD, yesterday.
The delegation was led by Chairman of NAD, Yang Berbahagia Senator Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Prof.Dr. Ibrahim Shah Abu Shah.
Meanwhile, the winner of the NAD Kedah Zone will later compete at the national level from 9 until 12 May, 2015.
During the event, Dato’ Haji Mohd Rawi Abdul Hamid, Kedah State Executive Council member, presented medals and trophies to the overall winners who represented Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi, Gopeng dan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Chung Lin, for the junior and senior levels respectively.
