UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said that the carnival would provide students with new and refreshing dimension of Islam by affording them with knowledge and deeper understanding through various activities.
"Spiritual programmes such as these are crucial as we want to draw in students’ involvement into spiritual and religious practices because there are a lot of misunderstanding and misinterpretation about Islam in recent years," he said.
He also added that the carnival would in a way open up the minds of students to the knowledge of entrepreneurship and business which according to the hadith is 9/10 of the source of income in Islam.
Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said this while officiating the opening of the UUM Islamic Entrepreneurial Carnival at the grounds of the Sultan Badlishah Mosque recently.
Collaboratively organised by UUM, GAT Management Sdn Bhd and the UUM Student Representative Council (MPPUUM), the carnival which lasts for six days began on the 12 May.
With its apt theme 'Jom Ke Masjid' the carnival hopes to accentuate the harmony of Islam within the students themselves.
In addition to sales outlets, many activities have been planned to take place throughout the duration of the carnival namely Forum, Night for Gaza, Dikir Zikir Recording Programme, Salawat Programme as well as Nasyid Competition.
Meanwhile, in his welcoming speech, the President of MPPUUM, Mr. Mohd Ali Faiz Salleh said that the programme, the first of its kind, hopes to foster friendship amongst students through the mahabbah approach.
"The theme of the carnival 'Jom Ke Masjid' hopes to initiate the spirit of mahabbah or love for the mosque. A mosque is a place for Muslims to congregate and merge as one."
"It is also consistent with one of the objectives of the student representative council that is to attract and motivate the campus Muslim community to get involved and participate more in the various spiritual and religious activities conducted at the mosque," he said.
Also present at the opening ceremony were the Director of the UUM Islamic Centre, Assoc. Prof. Dr Ismail Ishak and university officials. Attendees were also feted with live performances by the Al-Mawlid qasidah group and a well-known local Nasyid group, Hijjaz.
