To ensure UUM denizens have accurate information about the GST and prices of goods, the Economic and Financial Policy Institute (ECoFI), School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB) under the College of Business (COB) of Universiti Utara Malaysia organised the second forum on the GST – Monitoring and Implementation.
The forum was officiated by the Dean of the SEFB, Prof Dr Yusnidah Ibrahim. In her speech she said that the GST Forum II is a continuation of the first forum on GST conducted previously which received over-whelming support from the campus community.
"The success of the previous forum on the GST implementation has generated the interest of a large number of students, thus by organising the second forum, will enable all parties to engage in discussion pertaining to issues related to GST with experts in the filed serving as panellists."
"A month has passed since the implementation of GST, various problems and grievances have been heard from both traders and consumers. Such grievances are expected for a country going through a transition from Sales and Service Tax (SST) system to GST."
Taking the matter further, she explained that although in time the implementation of GST will finally be well received; all the issues and problems regarding GST and its implementation aroused now should not be overlooked.
"The issues on mobile prepaid card rates, imposition of service charges and significant increase in prices of goods and services exceeding 6%, need to be addressed immediately. Hence, this forum is expected to produce concrete and pragmatic solutions to the problems pertaining to the implementation of GST, faced by many, particularly by the consumers."
Besides that, she reiterated that the forum would certainly help disseminate accurate information about GST that is still shrouded uncertainties to some and UUM through the SEFB and ECoFI will continue to conduct activities related to GST from time to time.
The panellists of the forum comprised of the Kedah Custom Senior Assistant Director 1, Abdul Halim Ramli; Senior Assistant Director of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives, and Consumerism (KPDNKK) Putrajaya, Kaladevi d/o Kailasam; and Executive Secretary of Consumer Association of Kedah (CAKE), Mohamad Yusrizal Dato' Yusoff.
