Muhammad Afif Muhammad Razif, 20, Amirul Aizat Abdul Bahar, 22 and Hilferah Tan, 24, as well as three other golfers who are not students of UUM namely Chan Tuck Soon, Loy Hee Ying and Nur Duriyyah Damian will together represent the country in the golf event, which will feature four gold medals for the respective individual men and women categories as well as for the men and women team categories.
UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak called on the athletes representing the country to aim and acquire the gold medal in addition to maintaining the good name of the university, the ministry and the country.
He was speaking at the presentation of the flag to the UUM athletes who will represent the Malaysian contingent to Universiade 2015 at the Vice-Chancellor’s Meeting room, yesterday.
Also in attendance were team manager, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azman Yasin, who is also the Director of UUMNGA, UUMNGA Coach Wan Rosni Wan Chik as well as the three athletes who will represent the country.
The Vice-Chancellor also reiterated that selection to the biggest in the world university tournament is based on the athletes’ best performance during the PIHL Golf Tournament which took place in May of this year that have entitled them to be selected based on merit to represent Malaysia to Gwangju, Korea.
"What is more interesting is the Universiade is held in the month of Ramadan which will definitely bring about additional challenges to Muslim athletes especially when they need to fast for 16 hours in the summer which is currently being experienced in Korea now. I hope the athletes will take care of their diet and health in order to achieve the highest stamina," he said.
The golf event was not contested in the Universiade held in the city of Kazan (Tatarstan, Russia) in 2013, hence the Ministry of Education (MOE) has set a target for the golf team at the Games this year that is to acquire a medal for the men's team and improve its 4th position obtained at the World University Golf Championship (WUC) held in Switzerland in 2014.
To realize the dream, the golf team began its intensive training from 23 June until 1 July, in UUM monitored by Assoc. Prof Dr. Azman Yasin and Wan Rosni Wan Chik, who is made responsible for ensuring the preparation and the health of all three athletes is at the optimum level.
The training programme undergone by the athletes has come to the final phase where more emphasis is given to improving the athletes’ mental strength, giving routine checks and ensuring that the athletes constantly remember the goal and objectives of their mission.
The Games which is organised every two years provides the best venue for university athletes to develop their talents in sports is set to take place from 3 to 14 July.
