UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the role of the security forces is not merely to control the safety of the university community and property of the university but should reconnoitre, patrol, gather information, report and prevent any activity that may threaten the peace of the university and its denizens.
"In the world today, we face new kind of threat through the social media namely militant groups that recruit fellow students and lecturers to participate in subversive movements and incite them to bring down the government through student movement."
"This has happened in some countries in which student movements have managed to be manipulated by certain parties in their bid to topple the government similarly to what has happened in Latin America and Asia."
"As such these security threats through new media have to be curbed immediately and looked into seriously by all parties," he said this in his speech during his working visit to the UUM Security Department recently.
He also made several recommendations to improve and strengthen the Security Department, particularly in dealing with the new threats of today.
Among the suggestions made were the establishment of the IT Unit in dealing with threats through social media, improve on discipline, physical fitness and skills of security personnel through various training courses and establish the rapid squad which will act as a search and rescue team in case of any untoward incidences.
In addition, he also reiterated that as members of the security personnel they should always be alert, vigilant and curious of the surroundings in hopes to prevent any threats to the university as well as being trustworthy, loyal, fair and friendly.
Being the second visit to the Security Department since becoming the UUM Vice-Chancellor in 2010, Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak was accompanied by the Registrar, Mr. Mohamad Akhir Hj Yusuf; Deputy Registrar, Mr. Baharudin Yaacob; Director of the Chancellery, Mr Ahmad Rasidi Abdullah and university officials.
