UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato 'Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said out of the total, 2,791 were made up of female students, while the rest (913) were male students who had been chosen by the Central University Unit System (UPU).
According to him, the students who were selected to continue their studies in UUM comprised of students who had completed their Diploma and Matriculation as well as those who had acquired the Malaysian Higher School Certificates (STPM) and the Malaysian Higher Religious Certificates (STAM).
"In addition, a total of 190 international students from 18 foreign countries have also been accepted to pursue their Bachelor Degrees at this university. The countries with the highest number of students are Indonesia, Somalia and Thailand.
"In fact, UUM also offers three categories of admissions for the international students intake namely the CELEC Programme (Batch 9) (39 students), Mobility Programme (80) and Dual Degree Programme (22), aside from the usual student admission channel," he said this during a session with the media conducted at the Petronas Student Residential Hall (DPP), yesterday morning.
He said, the Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours programme received the biggest number of student admission with 303 students, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Economics with Honours (183), Bachelor of International Business Management with Honours (160) and Bachelor of International Affairs Management with Honours (157) ,
According to the Vice-Chancellor the cumulative grade point average (C.G.P.A) accumulated by this year’s students intake increased to 3.5 as compared to last year’s 3.39.
He said, as many as three programmes recorded the highest C.G.P.A namely 3.99 for the Bachelor of Accountancy with Honours, followed by 3.96 for the Bachelor of Accountancy (Information Systems) and 3.92 for the Bachelor of Philosophy, Law and Business.
"Bachelor of Accountancy with Honours is also listed as one of the most popular study programmes selected by candidates with the C.G.P.A of 4.0 based on the first choice programmes made by these candidates through the UPU.
"Coincidentally, this session will also see for the first time, 97 UUM foundation students joining the selected study programmes," he said.
He also reiterated that to strengthen the programmes offered, UUM had decided to make Mandarin as a compulsory language component for nine (9) Bachelor programmes namely the Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours, Bachelor of Entrepreneurship with Honours and Bachelor of Human Resource Management with Honours.
According to him, in order to provide UUM graduates with more than one field of work, as many as 26 minor study fields involving 16 programmes are introduced in the 2015/2016 session.
Innovative Multimedia, Insurance, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Financial, Filming and Tourism and Corporate Communication were among the minor fields chosen he said.
"Up until 31 August, the total number of students in UUM stands at 27,945 people with those who enrolled for graduate studies (21,102) and postgraduate studies (6,843) not inclusive of students who newly enrolled," he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ahmad Afnan Irfan Ahmad Zukri and Madam Nurul Hasanah Salim, a married couple who were both offered admission to UUM expressed their happiness to have received the opportunity to study in UUM together.
Mr. Ahmad Afnan Irfan will pursue the Bachelor of Muamalat Administration programme with Honours while his wife will pursue the Bachelor of Finance and Islamic Banking with Honours programme.
According to the father to be, he did not expect his first choice to continue his studies in UUM to be successful moreover this would be an opportunity to continue the tradition of pursuing studies in UUM after his father, Mr. Ahmad Zukri Embong, 51, a UUM alumnus from the second batch.
