AYIFF'15

Kanlungan won over six other films vying for the title, specifically March 9, 1993, Daddy... Aqi Nak Jadi Tok Dalang, Princess Urduja, Semut dan Siput, Watery Grave and Doraiman for the Best of The Best category.

A total of 11 awards were presented at AYIFF'15 Gala Night which saw healthy competition within the local Indie film-making community as well as contestants from other Asian countries.

Louise Isabel Corpuz Mendoza from U.P. Film Institute of the Philippines, University of the Philippines – Diliman also bagged the Best Narrative Film and Best Cinematography awards.

The ‘black tie’ event with the theme, 'Cultivating Youth Creativity' was officiated by the Chairman of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), Dato' Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib. Also present at the event was UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak.

In his speech, Yang Berhormat Dato' Mohd Khusairi said, AYIFF was organised with the purpose of honouring the artistic talent, ideas and the work quality of young artists who are involved in the production of Indie films. AYIFF is seen as a platform for the artists to share and showcase their thoughts and ideas at the national and international levels.

He added that, in conjunction with the film festival, UUM also hosted the Creative Industry International Conference (CIIC) 2015. This conference serves as a platform for researchers to share and explore their ideas and research interests. Moreover, this conference also provides the opportunity for researchers to expand their networking with the experts in the field of creative industries.

"On the whole, we have seen the rapid growth of creative industries in Malaysia. Nowadays, Malaysia has become a significant player in the field of creative industries in the region”.

He futher expressed his sincere hope that AYIFF'15 will be the catalyst for young talents to pursue their interests in creative industries and UUM will continue to host this impressive festival every year.

Speaking at the event press conference, Yang Berbahagia Dato' Seri Vice-Chancellor said, the organisation of AYIFF'15 is part of the university's contribution to help the industry in producing young talents who will continue the legacy of Dato' Yusof Haslam.

He added that, UUM also will soon produce graduates from the first batch of the Bachelor of Creative Industries Management. These graduates are not only conversant in every areas related to film production but also in the fields of management and business.

"These two elements are crucial for the reason that to become a “success story” in the creative industries, one needs to master these two areas and UUM is the only university that offers the combination of the two fields with the aim to produce excellent industrial managers who are competent in their domain.

Dato' Seri Vice-Chancellor added that, he felt confident with the response and support from FINAS and UUM would host AYIFF as an annual event or perhaps a biennial university event.

Other significant wins during the gala night were a film entitled “Daddy... Aqi Nak Jadi Tok Dalang” that walked away with the Best Documentary Film award, Best Animation Film (Semut dan Siput), Best Experimental Film (Watery Grave), Best Public Service Announcement (March 9, 1993), Best Direction (Tan Ce Ding), Best Script/Screenplay (Princes Urduja), Promising Young Minds (Doraiman) and Noor Shafiq Nordin (Indraloka) bagged the Special Jury Award.

The “Youth Film Icon” was awarded to the award-winning producer and director, Dato' Yusof Haslam in recognition of his significant contributions to the national film industry.

AYIFF'15 was hosted by Muaz Mohamed and Tasneem. The event was further enlivened with stage performances by Azlan Typewriter, Aweera, Azhael and Salma Mentor.

Also present at the event were the Producer of Orangetree Production Sdn. Bhd., Datuk Jaspal Singh Sher Singh; Chairman of the Creative Content Industry Guild (CCIG), Jurey Latiff Rosli; UUM senior university officers and local artists including Afiq Muaz, Fizo Omar and Nur Zahirah Zainol Macwilson.
