UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak in a press conference said that the use of QR code is the first of its kind for a Public University (UA) in the country will provide an easy way of verifying the authenticity of the certificate.
According to him, by simply scanning the certificate with the help of an application downloaded via smartphone, a person can receive notification or information about the certificate owner.
"This is the latest innovation made by UUM in the security aspect whereby all the certificates will be printed by the National Printing Malaysia Berhad (PNMB).
"With the QR code, companies or employers will get instant verification from the UUM database," he said.
The convocation ceremony which takes place over five (5) consecutive days will begin with the presentation of the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Business Management) to the President of the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Syed Ali Mohamed Alattas and Honorary Doctor of Philosophy Degree (International Political Economy) to the Chairman of CIMB ASEAN Research Institute, Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Mohd Munir Abdul Majid.
The Vice-Chancellor said that the two national figures will be awarded with Honorary Doctor of Philosophy Degrees respectively, by the Chancellor of UUM, Her Highness Yang Teramat Mulia Dato’ Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Binti Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Tunku Panglima Besar (Member of the Kedah Council of Regency) at the first session on 24 October.
According to him, the convocation which takes place over nine (9) sessions will witness a total of 1,535 (22.9%) postgraduate students and 5,174 (77.1%) first degree students receiving their scrolls.
He said out of the 1,535 postgraduate students , 176 graduands will receive the Doctor of Philosophy , Doctor of Management (1); Master’s Degree (1,264); Bachelor’s Degree (5,174), Postgraduate Diploma (Diploma in Education) (66) and Graduate Diploma in Correctional Science (28).
"A total of 6,328 graduands are Malaysian while 381 graduands hail from 33 countries abroad.
"In addition, out of the 5,174 first degree graduands, 526 graduands are awarded with first class honours. This figure shows an increase of 74 graduands compared to graduands of the 27th convocation in 2014.
"The number of PhD and Master’s graduands also showed an increase whereby a total of 38 PhD and 220 Master students will receive their scrolls compared to the previous convocation," he said.
He also added that a total of 602 graduands have been selected to receive 21 major University awards such as the Vice-Chancellor's Award and the Best Thesis.
In addition, the 28th convocation ceremony will witness three (3) pioneer postgraduate graduands from the Master of Science (Multimedia Studies) and a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) graduating.
At the same time, the 28th UUM Convocation Fair with its apt theme “Holistic Graduate Basis of Excellence” will take place from 21 to 28 October 2015, from 9 am to 11 pm at various locations namely the Expo site, the PALAPES marching ground as well as surrounding areas on UUM campus. The Convocation Fair will be officiated by Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Azlan Man, Perlis Menteri Besar on 21 October 2015 at 9 pm at the grounds of the Convocation fair.
Other interesting events set to take place are expos and exhibitions which involve small medium enterprises (SMEs), antique car exhibition and PC Fair, sports and leisure activities such as exploring the eight districts in Kedah with the UUM 4x4 club as well as football and futsal competitions involving local celebrities and selected UUM teams, cultural performances and entertainment shows performed by artistes namely Faizal Tahir, Azlan Typewriter and Dato' Ramli Sarip, along with more than 200 stalls being set up throughout the duration of the Convocation Fair.
Also present at the press conference were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Hassan Ali; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim; Director of the Chancellery, Mr. Ahmad Rasidi Abdullah; Director of Academic Affairs, Madam Rahimah Saad and UUM officials.
