UUM Chancellor, Yang Teramat Mulia Dato' Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, Tunku Panglima Besar Kedah (Member of the Kedah Council of Regency), bestowed the honorary degrees to Datuk Syed Ali and Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Mohd Munir during the first session of the convocation ceremony at Mu'Adzam Shah Hall.

"I dedicated this honorary degree to all business community in Malaysia who is completely immersed in the rhythm of a life of business," he said this at a press conference held after the first session of the convocation ended.

Ever since he began to learn about the world, Datuk Syed Ali identified himself with the concerns of the world of business. He began his own business career as a partner and manager of the Alatas Store (Toko Alatas) in 1957. Today, he has attained the position of Chairman of the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (MCCM).
Apart from this, Datuk Syed Ali is also the President of the Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM); President of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Council (NCCIM); President of the MCCM of Johor; Chairman of the Johor Muslim Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (PERKIM); President of the Alrabitah Alarabiah, in Johor; and Chairman of the Johor Islamic Affairs Council.
Meanwhile, the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (International Political Economy) degree recipient, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Mohd Munir Majid expressed his heartfelt thanks to UUM for bestowing him the inestimable honorary degree. Commenting on this, the Penang-born said, the conferment of the honorary degree was indeed a very awe-inspiring moment, and he was committed toward strengthening the existing relationship with this university.
"I have been receiving international recognitions and awards, including from my alma mater London School of Economics (LSE). It is indeed such a great honour and a privilege to me to be bestowed the honorary doctorate from this institution of higher learning," he said.
Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Mohd Munir is the prominent Malaysian economist and banker. He is currently the Chairman of the Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, CIMB Asean Research Institute and the Asean Business Advisory Council, as well as President of the Asean Business Club.
He also sits on the board of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia and on the Financial Services Talent Council of Bank Negara Malaysia.
