KPTN 2016 HELPS STUDENTS SET THEIR SIGHTS ON HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

The Carnival which begins in Kedah and ends in Selangor mainly involves various agencies related to higher education namely the 20 public universities (UA), Polytechnic Education Department (IRD), the Community College Education Department (JPKK), Private Higher Institutions of Learning and other agencies under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.

The KPTN “Jom Masuk IPT” Zone 1 held for the 12th time opened its doors to the public at the Darul Aman Stadium, Alor Setar Kedah, will proceed to the next 6 zones throughout the country.

KPTN Zone 1 is organised in collaboration with Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and was officially launched by the Minister of Higher Education, Yang Berhormat Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh.

The carnival aims to promote and disseminate information about the programmes offered by the various Malaysian public universities (UA), community colleges, Skills Training Institute (ILKA) and other institutions for the 2016/2017 academic session admission.

Moreover, the Carnival also hopes to educate and create awareness among the applicants and members of the public on the implementation of the application for admission to UA, community colleges and ILKA through UPUOnline via http://upu.mohe.gov.my URL. The Carnival also aims to inform the public of the entrance policy into the various UAs which adopts the 90% academic and 10% curriculum weightage; motivate and educate potential applicants by disseminating information on higher education opportunities in the UA, Polytechnics and ILKA locally as well as in other related higher education agencies.

The response from the public was overwhelming with thousands throng the two-day Carnival.

Mr. Abdul Muhaimin Riduwan, 17 from Perak described the Carnival as being very useful for a student like him as it provides him with the latest information about opportunities to further his studies after completing his secondary school later this year.

"By coming to this Carnival I have gained a lot of information on how to apply for admission into the UA in addition to finding out about the opportunities to further my studies to other institutions that can guarantee a good career and future," said the Form 5 student of SMK Dato Seri Wan Mohamed, Gerik.

His friend, Mr. Mohamad Zikri Mahmud also added that the Carnival also provides soon-to-be-school-leavers with greater exposure on the opportunities to further studies in higher education institutions as well as institutions which provide skills training.

"By coming to this carnival I have learnt more about institutions that provide skills training namely community colleges and Skills Training Institute (ILKA) which offer training programmes that are aligned with my interests that I can choose from," said the lad who is obviously keen to learn automotive-related skills training.

Meanwhile, another visitor, Ms. Siti Khatijah Che Hassan from SMK Teluk Bayu ,Sungai Petani, Kedah who also sang praises of the Carnival said that it has indeed brought about many benefits to students, especially in knowing the proper channels to apply for admission to the UA.

Among the activities which took place during the two-day Carnival were educational exhibition, Soaring Upwards Programme, Student Admission Seminar for school counselors and for the first time visitors were also enlightened on Lifelong Learning pursuits (LLL).

KPTN Zone 2 will commence on 13 to 14 February at DABS Square, Gong Badak Campus, UNISZA, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.
