TISSA-UUM REBRANDING CEREMONY: A SIGNIFICANT NAME CHANGE FOR FUTURE SUCCESS

Speaking at the ceremony, Tunku Chancellor expressed her utmost pleasure for the honour seeing that Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA) is her eponym.

She added that, various accreditations and recognition obtained by Accountancy programmes specifically the Bachelor of Accountancy and the Bachelor of Accountancy (Information System) indicated that UUM has been entrusted with much accountability to ensure the graduates demonstrate high overall potentials and the desire to succeed with high marketable skills as well as displaying essential leadership qualities.

"UUM incessant efforts to achieve its vision to be the Eminent Management University have come to fruition when the Accountancy and Finance subjects secured a position in the Top 200 QS World University Rankings by Subjectlast year.

"This is a major breakthrough and it should inspire UUM community to become more actively engaged and committed to ensure the continued success of the SoA in the international arena. The School of Accountancy will certainly keep up with the existing momentum and strive for future success and excellence," said Tunku Puteri.

The top management of UUM, led by the Vice-Chancellor has definitely drawn a strategic action plan to ensure continued success of UUM.

"Despite the fact that some parties are partial to the rating or ranking of the Institutions of Higher Learning (IPT), we need to understand what is relevant at the moment. This stance would only cause us to miss out on opportunities and be left behind.

"We observed that world leading universities display and use their ratings as a pull factor not only for students but also to attract the academics. Undeniably, this is one of the best ways to attract collaborative partners in the industry," she said.

Tunku Chancellor said, the accounting profession must maintain high ethical professionalism which includes integrity where ethics practices by the accountants will unquestionably improve and strengthen the governance of an organization. It can also prevent the downfall of the organization as evinced in organizations such asPamalat, Worldcom, Enron, Silverbird and a number of local companies.

Her Highness also expressed her utmost confidence that TISSA-UUMwill produce graduates who are able to demonstrate professional ethics with high integrity as outlined by the International Federation of Accountants Committee (IFAC) via its umbrella organization, The International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA).

"I hope the rebranding exercise of TISSA-UUMwill open a new chapter and produce more world-leading experts in the field of accountancy, not only to serve in Sintok but also around world," she said.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said, the rebranding exercise of TISSA-UUM is significant since this is carried out after 32 years of its establishment. This is in keeping with its standing as the largest accounting school in Malaysia, and it has produced more than 12,000 graduates.

He added that, the curriculum revision for the Bachelor of Accountancy and Bachelor of Accountancy (Information System) programmes have been completed, taking into account the feedback in relation to Strategic Plan Three. The report is used by IPT as a guide to prepare accounting graduates for the international accounting standard education.

"I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the SoA for their unrelenting support to accomplish the vision and mission of UUM as the university sought to obtain a place among the Top 100 in the QS World University Rankings by 2020. I also hope that TISSA community will be more enthusiastic and eager to make Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy the best Accounting school in the world.

The SoA was established in 1991 and it was known as the School of Accountancy. The school has gone through the restructuring process in 2004 and it was then known as the Faculty of Accountancy.

In 2008, the Faculty of Accountancy was placed under the umbrella of UUM COB until 2011. The name of the faculty was then changed to the School of Accountancy.

Also present at the ceremony were Dato' Tajul Urus Mat Zain, Kedah State Executive Council Member representing YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah; UUM Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Abdul Hamid Pawanteh;a member of the University Board of Directors (LPU), Dato' Hafarizam Harun;members of the University Management Committee (JPU), Dean of TISSA-UUM, Prof. Dr. Kamil Md Idris and UUM officers.
