Two Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) researchers, Mr. Jasni Ahmad, a lecturer at the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC) and Prof. Dr. Zulikha Jamaludin from the School of Computing (SOC) invented Fun with Mathematics: Shadowplay in Action, a digital wayang kulit (shadow puppet) model using the theory of interaction design (ixD) for teaching Mathematics.
The head researcher, Mr. Jasni Ahmad said, digital wayang kulit is a novel approach in the teaching of Mathematics (numbers and operations) and this approach is supported with the current pedagogy and the theory of interaction design (ixD).
"This invention complements the conventional approaches to teaching Mathematics and results from the initial study proved that it helps students arrive at solutions to mathematical problems more quickly and accurately,” he said.
“The innovation helps the teaching and learning of Mathematics by improving students understanding through the use of 17 learning activities. These activities are divided into three Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) components which include analysis, evaluation and creation. It also incorporates component-based interactive practice of the IxD theory. The product also assimilates components of holistic children development (psychomotor, cognitive, and affective). This makes learning process fun, engaging and interesting.
The research and development phase of this innovative product took a total of 24 months and this product has garnered various recognitions at the national and international levels including a gold medal at the 27th International Invention & Innovation Exhibition (ITEX '16) in May 2016 and the International Exposition of Research and Innovation in Education 2013 (Edu-InERI2013).
