"Ramadan educates Muslims’ hearts as it is made available in the Madrasah of Ramadan. When we talk about human heart, we talk about human soul and consciousness," said Tun Dato' Sri (Dr) Ahmad Fairuz Dato' Sheikh Abdul Halim, the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) at the UUM Iftar Reception 2016 at the Sultan Badlishah Mosque, yesterday.
According to him, human nafs influences human behaviours in developing soul and consciousness as described by Imam al-Ghazali in his book called Ihya' Ulumuddin.
He further reiterated that the three types of nafs namely Ammarah, Lawwamah and Mutmainnah exist in human beings.
"Self-discipline formed in the month of Ramadan is able to resist the nafs ammarah - the self that tempts to evil. Besides, the nafs lawwamah - the self-reproaching conscience that tempts to make considerations between good and bad, while the nafs mutmainnah - the self at peace that tempts to perform righteousness and attains Allah nearness and applies the sacred Islamic laws," he said.
