“……. So that you complete the number of days decreed for fasting (the whole month of Ramadan), and exalt Allah (by chanting the takbir) for His having guided you, and that, perhaps, you will be grateful.” (Surah al-Baqarah, verse 185)
The month of Ramadan, which we have journeyed through, is not just about withstanding hunger and thirst. In fact, this blessed month should be regarded, in itself, as an institution of learning centred on nurturing us to be individuals who are loyal, morally upright, dedicated, and tolerant – which attributes figure prominently among those acquired by the graduates worthy of being conferred a degree in piety by the institution of Ramadan.
After a month of fasting rigorously, heightening the degree of religious worship, and restraining our various individual cravings, we have been bestowed by Allah, the Most Glorified, with joyous Aidilfitri, the sign that we have successfully fulfilled His divine injunctions. In celebration of this success, let us, together, affirm the nurturing lessons of Ramadan by steadfastly adhering to the guidance of the holy Quran and the Sunnah, and strengthen the bonds of solidarity among the members of the Muslim community by visiting one another in accordance with the guidelines of Islamic conduct as laid down by the holy Prophet (peace be upon him), and forgiving and cherishing one another in healing acceptance.
Let us avoid wasteful practices and all that will nullify the merits of the religious virtues that we have accumulated over the past month. In addition, let us be mindful of the needs of the poor and destitute and extend our compassion to them by paying the religious tithe (zakat fitrah), by the means of which they, too, can rejoice in the glad tidings and merriment ushered in by the noble month of Syawal.
Lastly, on behalf of my family and myself, I would like to take this opportunity to ask for forgiveness, in all humility, for any wrong that we may have committed, either by word or by deed, in the past year. I pray that the members of the UUM community, while keeping safety as their priority during this festive season, will enjoy themselves thoroughly in celebrating Aidilfitri in the precious embrace of their loved ones. May the mercy and blessings of Allah, the Most Glorified, accompany each and every step we take in our journey through life.
I wish all Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri! (Video)
