To further intensify the scope of its business, EDC UUM under the auspices of Uniutama Property Sdn Bhd (UPSB), a subsidiary of UMHSB was rebranded to EDC Hotels & Resorts.
The ceremony which marked the rebranding of EDC Hotels & Resorts was officiated by the Bukit Kayu Hitam Assemblyman, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Haji Zaini Japar at the Sri Angsana Hall, EDC Hotels & Resorts yesterday morning. Fellow guests were also feted to festivities in conjunction with the Aidilfitri Open House organised by the UMHSB Group.
During his speech, Dato’ Haji Zaini Japar praised the various measures which had been taken by UUM to attract more visitors to the state in general as well as the Discover UUM 2016 programme in particular.
"Similarly, the role played by the subsidiary of the University which successfully ventured into business without expecting help from the state or central government as well as to compete with foreign companies to generate greater revenue and returns in the form of dividends to the university," he said.
He added that with newly developed premises built around UUM campus including the 4-Star EDC Hotels & Resorts with its latest addition would indeed reflect the success and ability of UUM in implementing its mission and vision as the eminent Management University in the region.
In addition to the launching of the new EDC Hotels & Resorts, he also opened the newly completed pool. The facility which would be placed under the management of UPSB would further diversify the various facilities found at the hotel as well as improve the quality of EDC Hotels and Resorts. At the juncture, he also graciously launched the EDC Hotels & Resorts Membership Card which would indirectly introduce and attract more customers to stay at the hotel while utilizing all the facilities and services available at a reasonable price.
Meanwhile, UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said UPSB formerly known as a cleaning company would now venture into various fields namely real estate, construction, hospitality, tourism and hospitality, laundry and hygiene, agriculture and retailing, film production and so on.
"To date, the UPSB company is well-known to be involved in a myriad forms of business ventures in the state of Kedah and together with its other subsidiaries, it will indeed go further to explore much larger markets such as those found in the Klang Valley, Langkawi Island , Penang as well as neighbouring countries like Thailand and Indonesia.
Hence, this would establish UMHSB as the pride of UUM in further cementing the status of UUM as the eminent Management University in the region with the ability to produce highly competitive companies that would venture and surpass business areas which provide high returns to the company in particular and the University in general, "he said.
The event also witnessed the Chairperson of the UPSB Board of Directors, Dato Megat Fairouz Junaidi Tan Sri Megat Junid, presenting the Vice-Chancellor with a cheque amounting to MYR350,000, earnings made from EDC Hotels & Resorts rental for the year 2015. Next, another cheque totalling MYR650, 000 as dividend payment was also presented by the CEO of the UMHSB Group, Mr. Suardi Mohamed Zakaria, present to accept the cheque was Tan Sri Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir , the Chairman of the University Board of Directors.
The payment of dividend represents the annual commitment of the company to UUM based on revenue generated by all subsidiaries under UMHSB. Both cheques were presented in the presence of Dato 'Zaini.
Also present were members of the University Management Committee, UUM senior officials and UMHSB members of staff.
