Documentary On Kedah Islamic Figures Upraises Glory Years Of Islam In The State


UUM ONLINE: March 22 – Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in collaboration with NBK Susunan Alam Resources is set to produce a 13- episode documentary which will showcase selected Islamic figures from the state of Kedah in efforts to upraise and highlight the immense contributions made by them in disseminating the teachings of Islam throughout the state of Kedah in as early as the 10th century.

Among the Islamic figures that will be featured in the documentary are Sheikh Abdullah al-Qumairi, Haji Ishak Muhammad Hashim, Hj. Wan Muhammad Idris al-Jarumi (Tok Sheikh Jarum), Tuan Hussein Mod Nasir and Wan Sulaiman Wan Sidek.

Hence, a special ceremony which marks the Pre-Launching of the Kedah State Islamic Figures Documentary (TIK) was officiated by Dato' Mohd Rawi Abd Hamid, Kedah State Religious Affairs, Indian and Siamese Community, Human Resource and Tourism Committee Chairman. Also present were UUM Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak; Director of NBK Susunan Alam Resources, Dato' Khamshah Abu Bakr and Nasir Bilal Khan, actor-cum-Managing Director of NBK Susunan Alam Resources.

In his speech, Dato' Mohd Rawi said that the state government welcomes documentary projects such as this which aims to highlight the Islamic figures who have contributed to disseminating the teachings of Islam in this country and homeland since the 9th century.

"The production of this documentary is significant because it can restore the identity of Muslims by highlighting the contributions made by previous Islamic leaders and figures in various fields such as science, medicine and etc.

"I hope the younger generation will value and appreciate the struggles of these Islamic figures and use their experiences as reference to the Muslim community, the world at large as well as to other races," said he who represented the Kedah Menteri Besar, Dato' Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir.

Meanwhile, according to the Vice-Chancellor, UUM researchers have completed their research on the 13 Kedah Islamic figures who will be featured in the documentary and are now in the process of producing a high quality script before filming the documentary can begin.

He also expressed his pride that a production house will collaborate with UUM to produce a documentary which aims to restore and upraise these Islamic figures in the historiography of the state.

"UUM has the expertise in terms of research assistance and is also able to perform the task of filming this documentary through UNIFILM.

"The combination of this joint venture will allow information and historical materials be combined and documented so that it becomes a collection of high historical value that can be used as study material, reference and source of inspiration for the people," he said.

According to actor, Nasir Bilal Khan the documentary project is expected to start shooting by the end of this year. Shooting is expected to take place in several countries other than Malaysia namely Thailand, Indonesia and the Middle East at the cost of MYR2 million.

This project has also gained the support from the Kedah State Government and the Kedah Branch Malaysian Historical Society.
