UUM ONLINE: The Utara Book Fair held annually by UUM Press of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has long been synonymous with fairs that have attracted crowds including good authors and book lovers over the years.
Now in its fifth year, the Utara Book Fair at the Foyer of Sultanah Bahiyah Library is expected to draw more visitors throughout the 7-day sale which ends on Saturday, 28 March.
With a whopping books of 15 different publishers to choose from, book lovers and enthusiasts will be impressed by the selection of titles.
The member of the University Board of Directors, Dato’ Paduka Abdul Rahman Ibrahim opened the book fair.The opening ceremony also saw the launch of 17 new books published by the UUM Press.
Dato’ Paduka in his speech said that the 57 years of independence have witnessed a drastic change in the aspect of educational development and publication of books in particular.
He added that one of the developments that can be seen today was the massive production of a variety of books with different genres and book fairs served as a platform that brought together the works of these respected authors.
“Utara Book Fair helps fostering a healthy reading culture and given the wide variety of books, people of all ages around the campus will find something here that interests them.
“I fervently hope that this university will produce graduates who love to read and can contribute to a country with which there is an opportunity to acquire knowledge through reading,” he said at the launch, which was followed by a tour of the exhibition area.
Meanwhile, Director of the UUM Press, Dr. Ram Al Jaffri Saad said that the book fair was intended to spread knowledge with numerous genres of books. He further said that the good authors nowadays were not only made up of professionals, but also amongst housewives and farmers.
“The denizens who want to get the latest works of the local and international authors are most welcomed to visit this book fair,” he said.
In conjunction with the book fair, visitors also saw the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the selected authors, the presentation of the Library Consumer Choice Award 2014 and the submission of the promotional bunting of the upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2015.
With its apt theme this year, 'Membaca Mencetus Idea Kreatif dan Inovatif', Utara Book Fair offered a variety of books with different genres range from scientific, religious and creative works. A minimum discount will be given for the purchase of selected books, and with selected titles going even cheaper.
In addition, visitors can look forward to a Creative Writing Workshop by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lim Swee Tin, poem recital, library online quizzes and a discourse entitled ‘Penghayatan Solat dan Adab Sebelum Suluk Tarekat Naqshabandiyah’ with Dr. Rosnaaini Hamid.
