UUM ONLINE: The Kumpulan Tarian Bidasari troupe from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) emerged as the first runner-up at the Johor Zapin Festival MAKUM 2016 held at Mu'adzam Shah Hall, UUM.
The troupe from UUM received RM2, 000 and a trophy. In addition to appearing as the first runner-up, the troupe also won the Best Choreography category.
A total of 350 participants from 14 Public University (UA) and the Tenaga Nasional University (Uniten) participated in the festival organised by UUM Arts and Culture Centre (PBS) and Johor Heritage Foundation (YWJ) in collaboration with the Malaysian Universities Cultural Council (MAKUM).
The final round of the zapin festival saw five troupes including from UUM, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Pendidkan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) battled for a victory.
The UTM troupe emerged as the winner and took home RM3, 000 and trophies, while the UNIMAS troupe won the third place and received RM1, 000 and a trophy.
The final stage was also graced by interlude dance performances from Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent Alor Setar and the Johor Heritage Foundation.
The Bukit Kayu Hitam Assemblyman, the YB Dato' Hj. Ahmad Zaini Japar presented the prizes to the winners.
Also present were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc Prof Dr Abdul Malek Hj Abdul Karim, representing the Vice-Chancellor; Director of National Department for Culture and Arts of Kedah, Abdul Mutalib b. Abdul Rahman; Director of National Department for Culture and Arts of Perlis, Encik Rahmat Hj. Md Noh; Assistant Director of Cultural Arts Development, Syahrifah Noorfaiza S Rusli, representing the Director of the Johor Heritage Foundation; Director of UUM PBS, Huzaidy Hussain, and officials from UUM and MAKUM.
