UUM ONLINE: Canadians expect their government to be a leader in the human rights field by reflecting and promoting Canadian values as well as cultural diversity on the international stage.
Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia promotes commonly shared values such as equality and democracy through its participation in many international organisations including G7, G20, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), United Nations (UN), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Commonwealth and La Francophonie.
However, the Canada’s influence on the global stage is not widely known, especially to the Malaysians, as compared to the roles played by countries like the United States, United Kingdom, China and Japan.
In particular, in order to enlarge and clarify the Canada’s foreign policy objectives and its roles on the international stage to the Malaysian community, especially to the UUM students, the School of International Studies (SoIS) of College of Law, Government and International Studies (COLGIS), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) organised an Ambassadorial Talk entitled ''Canadian Diplomacy and Leadership: Prospects and Opportunities in Asia'' at the SoIS Auditorium.
The lecture was delivered by the High Commissioner of Canada to Malaysia, Her Excellency Judith St. George. She began by a brief introduction of Canada to the UUM denizens.
Apart from that, she also talked about the Canada’s Foreign Policy, Canada’s relationships with Asian countries and Malaysia, Syrian refugee crisis, and other related issues on the Canada’s foreign relations.
Also present at the event were UUM COLGIS Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Assoc Prof Dr Ahmad Bashawir Haji Abdul Ghani.
