ICOGPA2016 Inculcates the Concept of Good Relations Between the Government and Its Citizen

UUM ONLINE: The Public Service has achieved significant progress and innovation. However, there is a need for discussion in order to come up with a new approach to bridge the gap between the government, which acts as the presiding body, and its citizens. This is especially paramount in terms of the services provided as well as a review of the feedback from its citizens.

With that in mind, fellow participants congregated at the Seminar Hall B, UUM Convention Centre to take part in the International Conference on Government and Public Affairs (ICOGPA2016), aptly themed, Strengthening the Government and Public Affairs Functions: Leading for Global Challenges.

The Dean of the School of Government (SOG), Dr. Zaheruddin Othman said the seminar provided fellow academics, policy makers, professionals and students with a platform to share their experiences which involved the government that functioned as both the political and administrative institutions of the nation.

"This conference is important to establish cooperation and close relationships among academics, students and professionals, both local and abroad, in hopes for the advancement of the government administration and public management," he said.

According to him, in this challenging administrative era, the government, the private sector and the community needed to build a good relationship in order to work together to confront and deal with critical issues and global challenges in the new millennium.

Hence, he said, ICOGPA2016 focused on the important role of cooperation that should be played by the government and various segments of society. This also included the private sector and NGOs, whereby they too had to meet the global challenges.

"This Conference explores current and key issues which are related to the government administration and the public sector. In addition, ICOGPA2016 also examines the efficient bilateral relations between the government and the society as well as the need to establish good relations between the two entities involved.

"At the end of this conference, I fervently hope that fellow participants are able to uncover problems involving the community and the public affairs that may be associated with the effectiveness of the government institutions," he added.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Kedah State Deputy Secretary, Mr. Ammar Dato’ Shaikh Mahmood Naim who represented the Kedah State Secretary, Dato’ Bakar Din. The conference attracted nearly 200 participants from various countries namely Singapore, Thailand, Africa, Indonesia and Bangladesh.

More than 100 papers were presented. Among them were related to Corporate Governance, Government and Business Relationships, Governmental System, Human Resource Management, ICT and E-Government, Law and Regulations, Media and Communication in Government, and Public Finance.
