UUM ONLINE: UUM's position in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities has soared from the 1668th position to the 1486th position in the January edition of this year based on an official report issued by Webometrics in early February.
With this ascent, UUM’s position has risen indirectly to the 409th position in Asia and, from its previous 15th position, to the 9th position in Malaysia.
In 2016, UUM was ranked 1952nd in the world rankings in the January edition and 1668th in the July edition, whilst in Asia, UUM came in at the 441st position in the January edition and the 426th position in the July edition. As for its national standing, it was ranked 16th in the January edition and 15th in the July edition.
The evaluation that informs the Webometrics ranking is based on specific criteria, namely, Visibility (50%), Excellence (30%), Presence (10%), and Openness (10%).
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of Cybermetrics Lab, a research group under the auspices of Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain.
It is developed with indicators obtained in the month in question (January or July) to ensure that the data on the position of the university is constantly updated from time to time.
The original purpose of the Webometrics Ranking was to promote Web publication by way of gaining support for Open Access initiatives and electronic access to scientific publications and other academic material.
The position ascribed by the Ranking is not born of emphasis placed only on research yields but also on other indicators that, together, can better reflect the quality of the research and institutions around the world.
