UUM RTD Discusses the Potential of Knowledge Science as an  Academic Discipline

UUM ONLINE: Alor Setar - To assess the potential of Knowledge Science as an academic discipline which could be taught at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), in particular, and in Malaysia, in general, the School of Technology Management and Logistics (STML) organised a UUM Roundtable Discussion (RTD) entitled Knowledge Science as Integrated Discipline: Exploring For Malaysia at the TH Hotel, recently.

The programme, which was held in partnership with the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), was launched by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof Dr Noor Azizi Ismail, who represented the Vice-Chancellor.

In his speech, Prof Dr Noor Azizi Ismail said that knowledge had played an important role in economic development, wealth creation and the quality of life, for example, Knowledge Science in its role in societal life.

"Through this RTD, I see opportunities for cooperation and the exchange of information between UUM and JAIST. In fact, STML should seize the opportunity to step forward and promote the concept of knowledge sharing and exchange ideas and knowledge with JAIST," he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of the programme, Dr Norani Nordin, said that one of the aims of the RTD was to provide a forum for interaction between experts in Knowledge Science.

She added that it was also aimed at developing an action plan regarding the advancement of the field of Knowledge Science in Malaysia.

The UUM RTD, a brainchild of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, and JAIST, called for the involvement of leading academicians from Malaysia and Japan in the discussion on matters pertaining to Knowledge Science as an integrated discipline in Malaysia.

The programme, which attracted more than 50 UUM academics, commenced with a discussion, in the first slot, on a topic entitled Knowledge Science In Japan and Potentiality for Malaysia. It was jointly moderated by Prof. Dato' Abdul Rahman Aziz and two members of the panel, namely, Distinguished Professor Datuk Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Prof Dr Yukari Nagai of JAIST.

In the second slot, Prof Emeritus Dato' Abdul Kadir Lebai Din of UUM and Prof Dr Shungo Kawanishi discussed the topic entitled Applications of Science in Social and Economic Development, together with the moderator of the session, Prof Dr Ku Ruhana Ku Mahmud.

The final slot was taken up by a roundtable discussion on the topic entitled Science Knowledge: Idea Generation For A Blueprint For Malaysia. This was followed by a discussion on possible collaborative research ventures with JAIST.
