UUM Key Office Bearers Must Uphold The Principles of Integrity And Avoid Damaging The University’s Name

UUM ONLINE: Key office bearers of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) were urged to remain vigilant in upholding integrity and accountability so as to avoid creating negative perceptions about the university and tarnishing its image.

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, said that all office bearers in the university should adhere to the principles of integrity that were clearly outlined in the public service sector, by ensuring that they did not get involved in matters that might compromise their integrity.

"The university already has an Integrity Unit and we are taking proactive measures to further strengthen it through the collaboration with the Internal Audit Unit. This is to ensure that all staff members are free of integrity issues for the sake of preserving the good name of UUM.

"Apart from this, UUM has also established the Asian Research Institute for Corruption (ARIC), which focuses on corruption issues in Asia, specifically in the Southeast Asia, because we believe that there are still many more issues related to corruption that have not been fully fathomed, as yet," said the Vice-Chancellor at the Opening Ceremony of the Integrity and Accountability Course for UUM Key Office Bearers at the EDC Hotels & Resorts, yesterday morning.

"The ARIC can also play an important role by becoming a back office for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). In fact, the material furnished by the cases can be used as teaching resources in the classroom,” said the Vice-Chancellor.

He added that UUM was also among the first universities to introduce the Management Ethics course to students.

A total of 70 key office bearers, comprising Assistant Vice-Chancellors, Deans, Directors, and Principals of Student Residential Halls (Inasis), attended the course organised by the Registrar’s Department. The course was conducted by the Deputy Chief Commissioner (Prevention) of the MACC, Dato' Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil.

Also present at the event were the Registrar of UUM, Dato’ Mohamad Akhir Yusuf; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Prof. Dr. Hassan Ali; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Noor Azizi Ismail, and senior officials of UUM.
