UUM ONLINE: A total of 10 postgraduate students of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) competed in the final of the UUM 3-Minute-Thesis 2017 (UUM 3MT 2017) competition, which was held at the Manager's Coffee Restaurant recently.
The competition, jointly organised by the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB), Awang Had Salleh Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (AHSGS) and Ghazali Shafie Graduate School of Government (GSGSG), provided students pursuing their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies the unique opportunity of giving a compelling presentation on their thesis and its significance within three minutes.
In essence, it is an exercise that challenges students to synthesise their ideas and research findings into a concise and cogent presentation that is comprehensible to a non-specialist audience.
The two main categories contested in the UUM 3MT 2017 competition are the Social Sciences and Science & Technology categories.
Ms. Napat Ruangnapakul, whose doctoral research is in Communication, won under the Social Sciences category for her thesis entitled Framing and Perspectives of Violence Against Women in Selected Thai Films. Ms. Tisya Farida Abdul Halim, whose doctoral research is in Decision Science/Operations, won under the Science & Technology category for her thesis entitled Taming Complexity: Using System Thinking and Simulation for Tobacco Control Modelling.
Each winner took home a cash prize of MYR150 and a trophy. Ms. Napat Ruangnapakul also won the crowning glory of the competition when she was conferred the "Best of the Best" title in the competition and took home a cash prize of MYR300 and a trophy for that additional feat.
The prizes were presented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim.
Also present during the competition were the Dean of AHSGS, Prof. Dr. Norshuhada Shiratuddin; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mazlan Ismail, who represented the Dean of GSGSG; Dr. Marlin Marissa Malek Abdul Malek, who respresented the Dean of OYAGSB; lecturers and UUM officials.
