UUM ONLINE: The Institute of Asian Studies at the School of International Studies (SoIS Institute of Asian Studies, SIAS) is patently capable of graduating into a full-fledged research centre delving in international issues, particularly those involving countries in the Asian region.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Noor Azizi Ismail, said that, as a centre of excellence at the School level, the SIAS must have a clear focus and a research portfolio that would render it more visible and relevant to industry, society and the nation.
"Various issues have impinged upon Malaysia lately, especially those pertaining to international relations in terms of trade, conflict, human rights, democratisation, and territorial disputes with countries such as China, India, North Korea, Myanmar, Singapore and others.
"Thus, we hope that the SIAS will undertake more proactive initiatives to launch research projects that will not only benefit UUM and its students, but also, more importantly, assist the general population in conflict-affected areas around the world," said Prof. Dr. Noor Azizi during the launching of the SIAS, at the SoIS Treaty Room yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Director of the SIAS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Muda, said that the SIAS would focus on the fields of study related to geopolitics, geostrategy and geo-economics in the Asian region.
"Consistent with its launching, the SIAS organised its first academic activity, with practitioners in the field of international relations, in the form of an intellectual discourse between SoIS academics and members of the Association of Former Malaysian Ambassadors (AFMA)," he added.
Also present at the launching were the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUM COLGIS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani; the Adjunct Professor of SoIS, Dato' Mohamed Redzuan Mohamed Kushairi; members of AFMA, and lecturers, administrative officers and students of UUM.
