DTIGC And UUM Organise Charity Dinner to Help the Less Fortunate

UUM ONLINE: Kuala Lumpur, May 6, 2017 – In a bid to acquire additional funds and channel financial assistance to the less fortunate, D'Tandoor International Group of Companies (DTIGC) joined hands with the School of Business Management (SBM), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), to host a charity dinner, Night of a Thousand Dreams, or Malam Seribu Harapan (MASEH) 2017, at the Bank Rakyat Convention Centre (BRCC) last night.

The event, which has been held since the tsunami tragedy of 2004, which devastated parts of the country’s coastal regions, was also aimed at celebrating DTIGC’s Silver Jubilee and the 33rd anniversary of UUM’s founding, as well as obtaining the financial wherewithal to set up an Excellence Fund for the SBM, UUM.

The function, attended by over 1,000 guests, was enlivened by the presence of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Dato' Sri Alias Haji Ahmad, representing the Minister of Education, the Honourable Dato' Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

Dato' Sri Alias, who delivered the text of the Minister’s speech, conveyed his heartiest congratulations to both the SBM and DTIGC on their successful realisation of the charitable event, which was held to help the less fortunate such as the disabled and those afflicted by autism and Down syndrome.

"As we are well aware, the nation’s economy is now facing challenging times due to the global economic uncertainty. However, this only heightens my pride in UUM for being diligent, nevertheless, and remaining committed to generating revenue to cover its operational costs, as well as the costs that student and staff development entails, while, at the same time, never losing sight of its role in helping the less fortunate through charity events such as tonight’s charity dinner,’’ he said, in the midst of launching the SBM Endowment Fund and officiating the opening of MASEH 2017.

He added that smart partnerships and strategic cooperative undertakings between UUM and members of the corporate sector were in line with the strategic approach under the National Blue Ocean Strategy, which, introduced by the government several years ago, had helped reduce the gap between silos, increase outcomes, and save costs.

The Chair of the UUM Board of Directors, Tan Sri Siti Sa'diah Sheikh Bakir, in her speech said that cooperation between universities and the corporate sector did not only provide useful experience to students, but also increased the quality, as well as the employability, of UUM graduates, who would fill the jobs in management in the time to come.

Meanwhile, Associate Colonel (Civil Defence) Datuk Abdul Malik Abdullah, who is also the founder of DTIGC, said that DTIGC was actively involved in corporate social responsibility activities by spearheading several initiatives centred on obtaining benefits and provisions for the less fortunate members of the community, which were consistent with the objective of organising the night’s charitable event, i.e. to raise funds to help those in need.

The evening also witnessed the appointment of Datuk Abdul Malik Abdullah as Adjunct Fellow at the SBM, UUM.

MASEH 2017 Special Awards were also presented at the occasion. The Senior Assistant Commissioner of Prisons (Honorary), Dato Hj. Sheikh Ahmad Dusuki Sheikh Mohamad, was conferred the Community Spirituality Award while the Managing Director of Brickfields Asia College, Mr. Raja Singham, was conferred the Social Impact Award.

Guests were treated to performances by Dato' Ramli Sarip, Dato' Khadijah Ibrahim, and the children of the Down Syndrome Association of Malaysia.

Also present at the function were the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak; the Dean of the SBM, Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah, and senior UUM officials.
