UUM ONLINE: 8 May 2017 - The 2017 Innovative Research, Invention and Application (I-RIA) exhibition witnessed record participation in the history of its organisation when it successfully drew 195 participants from Universities and Polytechnics, as well as primary and secondary schools, from throughout Malaysia.
With the theme, Harnessing Technology for Humanity, the two-day annual programme, organised by the School of Computing (SoC), UUM, in collaboration with the Innovation and Commercialisation Centre (ICC), UUM, and the Student Development and Alumni Office, College of Arts and Sciences (PPA CAS), began today at the Mu'adzam Shah Hall, UUM.
The opening of I-RIA 2017 was officiated by Dr. Mohamed Sulaiman bin Sultan Suhaibuddeen, Head of the Malaysian Government Online Services Unit, who is also an Adjunct Fellow at the SoC.
The SoC’s initial efforts at organising I-RIA began in 2009 as a small scale programme encompassing competitions only among a small number of students from the Bachelor of Information Technology and Bachelor of Multimedia programmes, where it served as a platform for the participants to showcase their latest innovative creations.
Year after year, however, the scope of the I-RIA exhibition expanded gradually until it included the participation of postgraduate students and even lecturers with their own research projects.
Then, beginning 2015, the participation was opened to not only all the Schools at UUM, but also to other institutions of higher education in Malaysia, as well as schools. This was certainly a remarkable achievement for the SoC, in particular, and UUM, in general.
Meanwhile, the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUM CAS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huda Haji Ibrahim, said that I-RIA 2017 extended the scope of its projects to include projects in fields other than those only related to IT.
"A total of 19 categories will be contested in I-RIA 2017 including ICT, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Green Technology, Robotics, and Modelling and Simulation,” she elaborated.
I-RIA 2017 was enlivened by its first keynote address, entitled "Unleashing the Power of Innovation: Malaysia's Experience and the Way Forward,” presented by Dr. Mohamed Sulaiman.
The second and third keynote addresses will be delivered by John Tay Jin Kiong, Director of Digital Lifestyle and Society, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Dato’ Raja Munir Shah Raja Mustapha, Executive Director of MyEG Services Berhad, respectively.
An information sharing session with Muhamad Yusrizal Dato’ Yusoff and Tuan Hj. Abdul Rahman Samad, from the Communications and Multimedia Consumer Forum of Malaysia (CFM), MCMC, was also held during the event.
Also present at the opening of I-RIA 2017 were the President of the MARA Education Consensus Body of Malaysia (MUAFAKAT), Dato' Shahrulnizam Yunus; Chairman of I-RIA 2017, Dr. Amran Ahmad; and lecturers and UUM officials.
The prize giving and the closing of I-RIA 2017 will be officiated by Dato’ Raja Munir Shah Raja Mustapha, tomorrow afternoon.
