UUM ONLINE: 24 May 2017 - With a view to realising the objectives of the national agenda and the present needs of the community, specifically at institutions of higher education, civil servants need to know how to 'think' and 'act' beyond the pale of normalcy so as to find appropriate approaches to resolve persistent problems and wearisome weaknesses.
Pro-Chancellor of UUM, the Honourable Dato' Seri Amar DiRaja Dato' Seri DiRaja Tan Sri (Dr.) Osman Aroff, said that, in the present-day scenario, to manage an institution of higher learning, the organisation would require the leadership of a civil servant who, in addition to having admirable human qualities, would never hesitate to cast their lot with others in shouldering the onus of coming up with ways to generate wealth.
"This is in keeping with the government’s aspiration of realising the objectives of National Transformation 2050, or TN50, as proposed by the Right Honourable Prime Minister when presenting the country’s Budget for the year 2017.
"To help in realising the objectives of TN50, the UUM community must consciously lend active support given that this transformation entails a range of processes and long-term activities that are required to build a nation that is truly competent and reflective of a progressive mindset par excellence,” said the Honourable UUM Pro-Chancellor in his speech at the Innovation Day and University Awards Ceremony (HIMPU 2017) at Mu'adzam Shah Hall this morning.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, said that a total of 299 members of the staff had been selected to receive awards at HIMPU 2017.
He elaborated that among those recipients, 275 were conferred the Outstanding Service Award; 10, the Outstanding Key Office-Bearer Award; 2, the Academic Excellence Incentive Award; and 12, the Research, Publication, Teaching, Learning, Innovation, and Quality (APIQ) Award. Apart from this, he said, 5 projects and 15 departments would be conferred awards based on their outstanding merits and performance, respectively.
He went on to explain that the Outstanding Key Office-Bearer Award was given to administrative and academic staff members who, serving as Heads of Departments and Deans and Directors, had contributed significantly in those roles and had fulfilled the conditions that merited them the awards.
"I hope this recognition will become, for all award recipients, the inspirational flame that will ignite the unquenchable fire of the spirit to strive for greater heights of recognition and renown within the country and beyond," said the Vice-Chancellor, who continued further to enlighten the audience on UUM’s most recent achievements, including its success in obtaining the Self-accreditation Status from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and its impressive rise in world standing in the ‘QS University Rankings by Subject Area’.
Apart from this, the Vice-Chancellor also reminded the denizens of UUM to jealously guard their integrity and avoid getting involved in issues that could tarnish their reputation as well as that of the university.
At the ceremony, the Honourable Pro-Chancellor, together with the Vice- Chancellor of UUM, launched the first issue of the South East Asia Management Review (SEA MR), a scholarly magazine published by UUM Press.
Also present at the ceremony were the spouse of the Pro-Chancellor, Datin Seri DiRaja Puan Sri Nur Kathrina Koh Abdullah; the spouse of the Vice-Chancellor, Datin Seri Norhayati Nazri; members of the University Management Committee (JPU), and UUM senior officials.
