UUM Seals Pact With the Judicial Institution To Raise the Quality of Legal Education

UUM ONLINE: 25 May - The collaborative effort initiated by Universiti Utara Malaysia, (UUM) through its School of Law (SoL), with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court of Malaysia (PKPMP) is seen as a commendable start towards improving the quality of legal education in Malaysia.

Chief Justice YAA Tan Sri Dato' Seri Md Raus Sharif said that the strategic cooperation between UUM and the PKPMP through the MoU would lead to a positive impact in producing graduates who would meet the requirements of the job market (employability), whether they opted to become practicing lawyers, lecturers or serve with the government.

"This MoU will also strengthen the relationship between members of the academia and judges and judicial officers," said the Chief Justice in his speech at the ceremony to mark the signing of the MoU between UUM and the PKPMP, at EDC Hotels and Resorts today.

He added that the cooperation offered an added advantage to the officers of the Court in that it opened an avenue for those among them who would like to continue their legal education at a higher level of enquiry.

"This collaboration will also benefit both lecturers and law students who wish to consult in private, on a one to one basis, with the judges and judicial officers,” he elaborated.

"The Judiciary of Malaysia has had in place a judicial clerkship programme for the last two years in which selected graduates from local and overseas universities are given the opportunity to undergo the programme at the Palace of Justice for a period of three months,” he explained when speaking about some of the opportunities open to UUM law students through the partnership.

The MoU was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, while the PKPMP was represented by YBhg. Dato’ Sri Latifah Haji Mohd Tahar, the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court of Malaysia. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Chief Justice YAA Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Md Raus Sharif.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the cooperation ensuing from the pact would strengthen ties between academia and the judiciary.

The sealing of this MoU will enable UUM and the PKPMP to embark on collaborative undertakings in the field of education pertaining to judicial and legal services, continuous training and learning to improve the level of professionalism, and collaboration in research and the role of advocacy, subject to the laws in effect in Malaysia.

At the same event, a discussion of ideas was also held to provide the students of the SoL an opportunity to interact with the Chief Justice on issues related to the judicial system. The session was moderated by the Dean of the SoL, Dr. Zainal Amin Ayub.

Also present at the signing ceremony were His Lordship Dato' Hashim Hamzah, Judge of the Alor Setar High Court; the Honourable Judicial Commissioner of the Alor Setar and Perlis High Courts; Datuk Haji Aslam Zainuddin, Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal Court of Malaysia; and senior officers of the PKPMP and UUM.
