UUM ONLINE: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is now the only non-comprehensive and non-research local university that has made it to the top 2.7% of universities listed in the QS World University Rankings 2018, from among 26,000 universities around the world.
Though not offering any study programmes in the fields of science, medicine, engineering or technology, and focusing only on the social sciences and management fields, UUM has managed to improve its position in the QS World University Rankings 2018 by rising to position 729, a rise of 10 rungs compared with the previously held position of 739, thus placing the university among the top 701-750 batch of universities in the world.
The QS World University Rankings is a prestigious ranking agency which establishes the annual world rankings of the best universities around the world. A total of nine local universities were listed in the latest ranking released on 8 June 2017.
This year, a total of 4,854 institutions were considered for inclusion and from those, only 959 institutions from 84 countries have successfully secured a place in the rankings, registering an increase of 43 universities compared with the total of the previous year.
These universities were evaluated based on the overall score of six indicators, namely, academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research citation per faculty, international student ratio, and international faculty members.
For the 2018 edition, more than 75,000 academics and 40,000 employers around the world were engaged in a global survey conducted by QS. A total of 12.3 million articles and 71.5 million citations were analysed to measure a university's excellence in research activities.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, expressed his gratitude and delight with regard to the commendable achievement of UUM. He added that he would like the denizens of UUM to intensify their efforts towards helping UUM soar further up the rankings and perch among the top 300 universities in the QS World University Rankings by the year 2020, in keeping with the objectives of Phase II (2016-2020) of the UUM Strategic Plan.
