Vice-Chancellor Urges Greater Output In Research And Publication

UUM ONLINE: "The research and publication output emanating from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is still very low and should be increased. Even though various incentives have been made available, the output in research and publication is still very low and far from being a fair reflection of the 1,119 lecturers currently serving at UUM," said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak.

According to him, last year, only 248 researches were successfully conducted, by 613 researchers (54.78%), while only 67 lecturers (6%) wrote scholarly papers, resulting in the publication of 754 journal articles.

He stressed that such below par performance stemmed from the lack of a strong research and scholarship culture. The love for research and publication at the University, he said, was yet to be second nature, yet to be the norm.

"This is a big challenge that we need to overcome. Hence, academics need to cultivate a strong research culture and improve the quality of research and development (R & D), apart from investing continuous effort in strengthening research and innovation activities, in keeping with the aspirations set out in the third thrust of the National Higher Education Strategic Plan (PSPTN).
"Every academician needs to publish at least one article every year to increase the number of publications at UUM," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor said this at the Ceremony to Honour Recipients of the Prototype Research Grant Scheme (PRGS) & the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) Phase 1/2017, held at EDC Hotels & Resorts, recently.

At the event, he presented certificates of appreciation to 29 researchers who had successfully obtained the PRGS and the FRGS.

Of the 29 researchers, 28 had received the FRGS, with the total funds amounting to MYR 1,574,831.40, and one researcher had received the PRGS with funds amounting to MYR32, 860.

Also present at the ceremony were the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUM CAS, Prof. Dr. Huda Hj Ibrahim; the Director of the Research and Innovation Management Centre (RIMC), Prof. Dr. Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani; and UUM officers.
