UUM ONLINE: Universiti Utara Malaysia's sporting reputation continued to flourish that much more in the golf arena when five UUM National Golf Academy (UUMNGA) students were officially entrusted with the task of representing the country at the 29th Summer Universiade Taipei 2017, which will take place in Taiwan from 20 through to 29 August.
The athletes concerned are Muhammad Afif Muhammad Razif, Sazanur Iman Salenin, Mohd Shakiran Johari, Nur Afifah Muhammad Razif, and Tham Soot Yuet, all of whom are currently pursuing their undergraduate studies in the Bachelor of Communication with Honours degree.
The Director of the UUMNGA, Assoc. Professor Dr. Azman Yasin, said that six golfers, comprising three men and three women, including a student from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), would represent the country at the international sports event. He said that the golfers were expected to leave for Taiwan on 20 August.
He further explained that the selection of the players was based on a new eligibility assessment scheme which, taking into account their achievements at the Higher Learning Institutions (IPT) Golf Tournament 2017 and a series of local amateur tournaments, helped determine their eligibility to represent Malaysia based on the merits of their performances.
"We hope to improve our previous standing at the 2015 Universiade Championship in Korea by securing bronze medals. This time around, the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) has set its target on winning bronze medals through both the individual and group categories.
"In an attempt to accomplish this goal, all the players underwent two months of intensive training supervised by a trainer from the United States. We have just returned from Taiwan where we had been to look over the location of the tournament so as to enable the players to familiarise themselves with the venue," he said, when met after the Flag Handover Ceremony held in conjunction with the 29th Summer Universiade Taipei 2017, at Manager's Coffee, recently.
The handing over of the UUM and Malaysian flags to the golf contingent that will be representing the country, was performed by the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Afif Muhammad Razif, a student of the UUMNGA, explained that all the players had been making rigorous preparations for this tournament since last year and that they had to even sacrifice their semester break to undergo training.
Muhammad Afif added that, even though they bore the heavy responsibility of representing Malaysia and the university, he and his team would remain positive and do their very best to excel and bring glory to the country and UUM.
