UUM ONLINE: Langkawi – Manager's Coffee, which began operations last year on the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) campus, has expanded its operations by opening its first branch at the Kuah Jetty, Langkawi.
The launching ceremony of Manager's Coffee, Langkawi, was officiated on 26 August 2017 by the Deputy Secretary-General (Consumerism & Management), Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK), Dato' Razali Othman, who represented the Minister of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Dato' Razali said that UUM's initiative to open the Manager's Coffee outlet was commendable as this business venture would not only help the university to generate income, but also offer employment opportunities to the public, especially students and new entrepreneurs who were looking for jobs through the franchise system.
"Apart from this, I also hope that Manager's Coffee will display the final price that customers will have to pay when they purchase a product at the restaurant, in compliance with the proposed amendments to the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which recommend that business operators do not spring unpleasant surprises on customers by adding on hidden costs to the bill when it comes time for customers to pay for their purchases,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the University Board of Directors, Tan Sri Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir, said that many would not have had expected UUM to open branded café outlets in the Sintok Valley or on Langkawi Island.
She added that Manager's Coffee would play a role as a training ground for UUM students in the relevant fields while, at the same time, generating income for the university in an effort to reduce the university’s dependency on government funding.
Manager's Coffee, Langkawi, is the first branch of the café established outside of the campus in efforts to expand the business and promote this UUM-born brand.
Manager's Coffee, Langkawi, is located at the island’s focal point, that is, the Kuah Jetty, and is expected to be its centre of interest and icon. Accordingly, the management team of Manager's Coffee is all set to develop a more aggressive marketing strategy to counter the intense competition from other brands.
Also present at the ceremony were the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak; members of the UMHSB Board of Directors, and officers from UUM and UMHSB.
