A Project That Derives Charcoal From Coconut Shells Wins A Grant Worth MYR20, 000 At ACADREX 2017

UUM ONLINE: A project, initiated by the UUM ENACTUS team, that derives charcoal from coconut shells, won the hearts and minds of the jury and secured the top award at the Academic and Research Exhibition (ACADREX) 2017, which ran for three days beginning 13 October, at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Perak.

The ENACTUS team from the Cooperatives and Entrepreneurship Development Institute (CEDI) was composed of Chang Hui Chang, Lee Rui Jia, Dheana Dipti a/p Mani and Richard Tan Lie Chen. The team presented the Co & Coal project and outdid 16 other teams from 10 universities nationwide to bag the top prize.

The team took home a cash prize of MYR2, 000 and a grant worth MYR20, 000. The runner-up was the team from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), which received a grant worth MYR15, 000. The third place went to the team from Universiti Tenaga Nasional KHAS (UNITEN), which received a grant worth MYR10, 000.
The Project Director, Chang Hui Chang, said that Co & Coal was a product that was derived from coconut shells and organic materials that were subjected to an environmentally friendly burning process before being converted to Coconut Bio Coal.

He explained that Co & Coal was initiated in 2014 and that it had gone through many research and development (R&D) processes, apart from having received funding from CEDI and a sponsorship from the Khind Starfish Foundation, to bring the project to fruition.

"At present, the project is already underway by helping the villagers in the Lembah Bujang area to produce charcoal using coconut shells," he said.

Meanwhile, the Coordinator of ENACTUS, Dr. Abdul Rahman Jaaffar, said that ACADREX 2017 was, in effect, a Social Innovation Challenge organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

He added that the Co & Coal project was presented at the ENACTUS Malaysia National Championship in July, but had failed to win any medals and that the defeat was redressed by the resounding triumph of claiming the championship title at ACADREX 2017.
