UUM ONLINE: 4 January - Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) in a bid to produce more professionals in the field of accountancy through collaboration between the two parties.
The signing ceremony which took place at the Mersawa Room, EDC Hotels & Resorts this morning saw the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak and MICPA President, Dato' Tan Theng Hooi exchanging the agreement in the presence of the Dean of Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chek Derashid and MICPA Vice-President, Dr Veerinderjeet Singh.
The Vice-Chancellor thanked MICPA for having the confidence in UUM's academic expertise and the willingness to work with UUM in ways of providing opportunities and access to UUM’s students to the highest professional standards, thereby supporting them in professional development and careers in accounting, business and finance.
According to him, UUM through TISSA had been working for a long with MICPA by supporting outstanding UUM students in the professional examinations through the MICPA-CAANZ programme.
"I believe that the collaboration in this programme will enhance the students’ education and also indirectly expose them to new cultures and challenges internationally through the MICPA professional qualification.
"And today's MoU also demonstrates that UUM is accepted by internationally recognized professional accountancy body such as MICPA in hopes of building excellence in knowledge and development of human resource," he said.
He added that the collaboration between UUM and MICPA was not only focused on students, in fact it would hopefully involve academics in ways of improving the quality of teaching in the field of accountancy in particular.
He said UUM and MICPA could work together to conduct case studies involving the field of accountancy by gathering materials for case studies as it was deemed the best approach in teaching and learning at the moment.
Meanwhile, Dato' Tan Theng Hooi said MICPA, an established accounting professional body was aimed at promoting accounting profession by providing training and professional examination in the said field.
According to him, the cooperation was expected to produce more professionals in the field of accountancy especially from UUM.
