Collaboration With SUHAKAM Enhances The Quality Of Teaching Human Rights Issues

UUM ONLINE: 16 January - To enhance the quality of teaching of the various aspects of human rights issues, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) established a smart collaboration with the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) at the Visitors Lounge, Chancellery this morning.

The cooperation was realized through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties that was officiated by UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak and Chairman of SUHAKAM, Tan Sri Razali Ismail.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the signing of the MoU reinforced UUM's strong determination and commitment toward championing the issues on human rights that formed the basis of the MoU.

"In view of its importance as an academic discipline, UUM incorporates human rights studies as one of the subjects taught in the International Affairs Management Degree programme offered at the School of International Studies (SoIS).

"This collaboration is a preliminary initiative to refine and update the syllabus on human rights, while at the same time UUM can provide a platform for SUHAKAM to raise awareness and promote the involvement of the general public in various programmes throughout the northern regions," he said when delivering his speech at the signing of the MoU ceremony.

The Vice-Chancellor further added that the collaboration would involve organizing various activities including joint research, lectures, training opportunities for students and UUM would also receive guidance and assistance from SUHAKAM in ways to improve the quality of teaching the various aspects of human rights issues.

Meanwhile, Tan Sri Razali Ismail said that the collaboration between SUHAKAM and UUM would not just be merely talking about human rights but it would be more of the application of human rights literacy while promoting human rights awareness in education.

The signing of the MoU was witnessed by UUM COLGIS Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Haji Abdul Ghani and Commissioner of SUHAKAM, Mr. Jerald Joseph.
