The Annual Public University ROTU Air Force Training Camp Draws To A Close

UUM ONLINE: 4 February - Airforce volunteer of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTU) were honoured at the Closing Ceremony of the Annual Public University Reserve Officer Training Unit (ROTU) Air Force Training Camp 2018 at the Muádzam Shah Hall, UUM yesterday.

Participants from six public universities spent two weeks at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) undergoing the Annual Public University Reserve Officer Training Unit (ROTU) Air Force Training Camp 2018.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam were amongst the universities which took part in the training exercise.

The closing ceremony was made even merrier with the screening of montage, exciting shows from every university such as theatre, busking, dancing as well as the presentation of souvenirs to each university.

UUM managed to defend its overall champion title won last year after winning the shooting contest, crossing the barriers and sports carnival for men's volleyball, women's futsal and netball.

The closing ceremony which was officiated by the Director of the Air Force Reserve Team, Colonel Muhammad Shafiq Jahudi RMAF was witnessed by Lt. Kol (K) Baharudin Yaakob PSSTUDM, the Registrar of UUM and Mej (K) Dr. Mutia Sobihah Abd Halim PSSTUDM.

Meanwhile, a student from the Bachelor of Social Work Management programme, Ms. Nur Shuaida Shakri, 23, admitted that she had long been interested in this field and wanted to learn more about the life of military personnel.

"People always say that military personnel are tough, boisterous, and brave, I wanted to get first-hand experience of a soldier's life, not just that, the activities we had to go through enabled us to become more disciplined and immaculate.

During this training exercise, the sweet girl from Melaka who was entrusted with the responsibility of the event manager led the opening and closing ceremonies and was also committed to carrying out duties with utmost dedication.

"In ROTU, we have to move fast accompanied by packed schedule so I have learnt to manage time well in everyday life; I have become accustomed to doing something in a planned state.

"ROTU also teaches the spirit of loyalty and diligence, we are taught to do work as a group so as a squad, we help each other in managing things," she further added.

She also reiterated that the camp was conceptually a contest for the students to really work and apply what they had done in training while nurturing leadership qualities.

Additionally, she said this annually held training camp was able to build good relations amongst students once they graduate especially when these students from various universities combine and form a platoon.

"One platoon will work together in the forest phase so they can get acquainted and expand their social networks as networking is very important to facilitate future affairs," she said.
