The Overall Score Of The 2017 Malaysian Syariah Index Shows An Increase

UUM ONLINE: Putrajaya - With an overall score of 76.06 percent, the Malaysian Syariah Index (MSI) for 2017 shows an increase of 0.6 percent when compared with that of the year 2015.

The announcement of the score was made by the Right Honourable Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, at a special gathering where he met with the Premier Council of Muslim Clerics and Islamic Non-Governmental Organisations, which also doubled as a platform for the Presentation of the 2017 Malaysian Syariah Index. The event was held recently at the Putra Hall, PICC.

The Prime Minister said that the Syariah Index report encompassed eight major areas which were related to the implementation of government policies and programmes, specifically education, legislation, economy, health, politics, infrastructure and environment, society, and culture.

"The previous assessment, the very first to be conducted, recorded a score at only the satisfactory level of 75.42 percent.

"Aside from this, four areas show significant improvement, namely, health, environment, infrastructure, economy and society, while the other four areas, i.e. education, politics, legislation and culture are still at a level that is encouraging," he said.

A total of 222 researchers from six public universities were involved in the MSI study, that is, UUM, the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, the Vice-Chancellor cum head of the UUM research team, was also present at the event.

The Malaysian Syariah Index was launched by the Honourable Prime Minister on 10 February 2015 in conjunction with the 2015 Premier Assembly of Muslim Clerics, with the aim of making Malaysia the pioneer in implementing the world’s first model of Islamic governance based on the principles of Maqasid Syariah, which encompass the preservation of religion, life, intellect, heritage, and property.

The Prime Minister also witnessed the signing of a MoU between the Ministry of Finance and the MSI.

Also present at the event were the Deputy Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Major General (R) Dato' Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.
