I-RIA 2017 Promotes New Innovative Products By Young Inventors

UUM ONLINE: 11 May - With its apt theme, ‘Harnessing Technology for Humanity’, the 2017 Innovative Research, Invention and Application (I-RIA) exhibition gave recognition to the innovative inventions of 195 participants at its two-day event, which ended at the Mu'adzam Shah Hall yesterday.

I-RIA, organised by the School of Computing (SoC) in collaboration with the Innovation and Commercialisation Centre, UUM, and the Student Development and Alumni Office, College of Arts and Sciences, is an annual programme which enjoys the participation of students from universities and polytechnics, as well as primary and secondary schools, from across the nation.

The prize giving ceremony of I-RIA 2017 was officiated by Dato' Raja Munir Shah Raja Mustapha, Executive Director of MyEG Services Berhad, who was accompanied by the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUM CAS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huda Ibrahim.

Dato' Raja Munir said that I-RIA 2017 was the perfect platform for promoting new ideas and concepts generated by students, especially in terms of highlighting their innovative products.

"This yearly event is excellent for cultivating an acute awareness of the importance of ICT in the world of the future, an awareness that is indispensable should we wish not to be relegated to the backwaters of civilisation in the time to come.

"I hope that the participants will find ways and means to commercialise their inventions, which, I pray, were invented not solely for the purposes of triumphing at competitions, but also for the purposes of realising their commercial potential," he said while delivering his keynote address entitled, “The 4th Industrial Revolution: Opportunities and Challenges.”

At the event, as many as five special awards were presented, namely, the TNCPI Award, which was clinched by UUM for the entry, P.S. 1.2.3: Interactive Mathematical Problem Solving Tool; the ICC Award, also won by UUM, for the entry, Online Bus Ticketing System (Web Based); the Best Award, which went to Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Polytechnic (PTSS), for their entry, Cristal 3.0.; the MyRIS Award, which went to 3 winners, i.e., SK Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin, for their entry, Smart Building, MARA Junior Science College Kubang Pasu, for their entry, Kupa SMART Boat, and UUM, for the entry, Yummy Recipe; and the IEEE Award, which went to 2 winners, i.e., Muadzam Shah Polytechnic, Pahang, for their entry, Home Security Surveillance By GSM, and the Tun Hussein Onn University of Malaysia (UTHM), for their entry, Compact, Flexible and Low-Profile EBG Enabled Antenna for Wearable Medical Application.

Meanwhile, the winner of the ICC Award, Ms. Noor Izzati Mohd Zainuddin, of the B.Sc. (IT) programme at the SoC, said that she had not expected to win the special award because of the stiff competition presented by many other highly innovative products there.

She said that her entry was the product of a project intended for a tour company which provided bus services specifically to the East Coast.

A total of 19 categories, such as ICT, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Green Technology, Robotics, and Modelling and Simulation, were contested at I-RIA 2017.
