A paradigm shift was required. This awareness, thus, in 1991, led to the establishment of Universiti Utara Malaysia Centre of Quality Management. Aimed primarily to look into the provision of quality services at UUM, the centrewas upgraded to an Institute in 1993, bearing the name Quality Management Institute. The Institute's Internal Quality Unit (UQD), set up in January 1999, played a pivotal role in cooordinating and implementing quaity training programmes towards the adoption of ISO 9000 Quality Management System at UUM. The Unit was then led by the Quality Manager whose team included the Institute's consultants and support staff. |

| Objectives |
| Our specific objectives are : |
|

| Mission |
| The Institute aspires to become the reference centre in the field of quality management in the region. It aims to achieve this through the provision of training, research, publication and consultancy, in particular to several main target groups - UUM, government departments and agencies, statutory bodies, as well as profit and non-profit private organizations. |
| Vision |
|
The Institute believes
that quality principles need to be extended to all UUM operational levels to
result in an impact. Acknowledging that commitment to a culture of quality should not be compromised, our vision is thus to create a community that is sensitive to the need for continuous quality improvement. |
